Solar Turbine shipment from UK to China
ALS UK was originally requested to transport a crate containing a Solar Turbine from a packing facility in Irlam to Felixstowe. The dimensions provided suggested the crate was 4.7m high (weighing around 52 m/t) and could easily be delivered by road to the port.

A site visit was performed by the team to check these dimensions before loading and the height of the crate was found to be 4.86m high increasing the overall transport dimensions to over 5m high making a road delivery in the time frame required impossible; as obtaining and planning a high load road route could take weeks if not months.
The change in dimensions had our customer seeking a solution from the ALS UK Operations Team for the transit of the Solar Turbine which was due to depart on a vessel from Felixstowe on 18th December. The turbine was required in China before the Chinese New Year at the end of January 2018.
The packing plant in Irlam is situated close to Irlam Container Terminal on the Manchester Ship Canal so the ALS team surveyed the short route and ascertained it was possible to move the crate on a trailer from the plant to the terminal. A solution was therefore offered to charter a vessel, load the crate at the Container Terminal and meet with the same vessel later on its voyage in Rotterdam on 23rd December 2017.
This solution was accepted by the client and the charter was fixed for the vessel MV Bonita to load 13/14 December 2017.
Despite heavy weather delaying the arrival of the MV Bonita in Irlam until the morning of Sunday 17th December, the crate was still loaded to the vessel enabling her to sail on the pm tide the same day. The MV Bonita arrived in Rotterdam on the 21st December allowing the crate to be discharged in plenty of time for it to be loaded onto the vessel earlier than planned!
