Top Cover Unit moved for a Hydro Turbine

ALS UK has completed the transport of a 73T Top Cover unit for a Hydro Turbine (renewable energy) from Dinorwig Power Station, Llanberis to Sheffield.

2nd September 2010

As the width of the cover was over 5 metres, permission was required from the Highways Agency and the majority of the movement had to be carried out at night.

The loading took place in a tunnel 200ft deep underground, deep below Elidir mountain. Due to the tight access, ALS supplied a 5-axle all steer semi low loader. The route passed along the A55 where there was a large amount of road works and lane closures, so close liasion with Keir Construction and local authorities was necessary to find a suitable window.

To achieve this movement the Top cover was packed up and raised by 300mm to clear roadworks and concrete barriers.

Due to the long and winding country roads, a Police escort was required through the Snowdonia National Park.

ALS UK also arranged the safe and timely return of the Top Cover back to the Power Station after refurbishment was completed at Sheffield.
