Silo transportation testing the limits
Huge polyester silo transported from The Netherlands to the United Kingdom
When our customer asked us to move a polyester silo measuring over 15 metres in length and well over 5 metres in diameter from The Netherlands to the United Kingdom, the operations team happily accepted the challenge.
7th April 2025

Initial Challenge
The loaded truck had dimensions of over 27 metres in length, over 5 metres wide and close to 5.5 metres high so careful planning and meticulous research was crucial to find a suitable and safe route to the end receivers in North Yorkshire.
After extensive research, the team identified a safe route for the loaded truck, mindful of the challenges posed by the small villages. While obtaining permits for such oversized loads typically takes several weeks, the team secured a specialized permit within just an hour!
Barge commissioned for the movement
As the transport commenced, it was loaded into a barge. It then sailed toward the biggest European Port, where cranes were set up to reload onto specially produced cradles which secured the enormous silo in the trailer's bed. Shunting within the Port, the truck took the weekend ferry service to Hull.

Upon arrival, customs released the cargo without problems. The cargo was checked by the team and after some slight adjustments to the cradles to ensure even safer positions, the transport convoy took off.

Escort & Arrival
The load was escorted by ALS’ escort vehicle along with police escorts, no less than three cars and a motorbike! A separate steersman was employed to help navigate through narrow turns. Also required were Tree Surgeons, to make sure no harm was done to both the precious cargo and the surrounding environment.
After successfully negotiating the complex route, the cargo safely arrived at its destination at the end of the afternoon and was promptly offloaded by the well-prepared receiver.
